I have gotten to work with a lot of different PT’s so far and I have gotten to learn a lot about their journey to getting to this point, and some of their thoughts regarding this field. For me, I am planning on majoring in Kinesiology and then pursuing PT school after that. Kinesiology is a newer and more popular field  There are lots of different routes to getting to be a PT such as pre-med, exercise science, and DPT. While knowing there are so many different paths I could take, It was assuring to know that they all lead to the same end result. Getting into PT school is very competitive, but they shared their experiences with the whole process. They all recommended getting as much exposure in the field as I can, both inpatient and outpatient, and keeping track of it because it will be something that they will ask for when I go to apply. Something I found interesting, is that most of the PTs there did not actually originally go into college with the intention or idea of being a PT. Most of them knew they either wanted to be in the healthcare field or in a field where they were helping others, but PT was not very well known until recently. At this specific clinic, they see patients for 45 minutes 1 on 1, and work from around 7 or 8 am to 3 or 4 pm. This may seem like a lot, and they definitely see a lot of patients in 1 day, but for a healthcare professional, these are very manageable hours, and they are never on call. They also get weekends completely off. Most of the PTs have worked in previous settings before this one, so it was interesting to hear their feedback in comparison to this specific setting. One specific one was a PT who had previously come from working inpatient but had to stop because it was too physically demanding and tolling. That was something I had never really thought of, but he had mentioned he had to move patients double his size and weight, and that eventually it caught up to him and caused back problems.

  1. What an amazing experience, Hayley. I am glad that you had the chance to put yourself into this work settings; they are going to teach you a lot. Especially, if you want to pursue a career in the health industry. Also, it is super important that have the chance to talk to PTs and get to know their experiences. That way, you know what to expect in the future and you avoid getting those "what am I doing with my life" moments in your career. Believe me, they tend to happen a lot! Keep up the good work, Hayley!
